ルイ・アームストロングが歌うWhat a wonderful worldは、｢この素晴らしき世界｣という曲名で日本でもよく知られている。
歌詞を辿ると、穏やかで美しい世界の様子が描かれ、« I see friends / shaking hands / saying,”How do you do ?” / They’re really saying / “I love you”と、愛を歌っている。
ほぼ同じ題名の曲( What a ) Wonderful world が、サイモンとガーファンクル、そしてジェームズ・テーラーによって歌われたことがある。
学校で勉強する色々な教科のことはよくわからない（Don’t know much about … ）し、自分は成績がいい生徒（’A’ student）ではないけれど、でも、１＋１が２ってことは知っているし、ぼくが君を愛していることも知っている、だから、その１が君と一緒で、君がその１である僕を愛してくれたらいいなと、こちらの歌も愛を歌っている。
どちらの場合も、youが大好きな君であるのが最初の意味だが、その背景にはもっと大きなyouがある。二つの曲の背景にあったのが、差別や偏見に満ち、戦争が起こり、人間と人間が対立する社会情勢だったことが分かると、歌の意味がもっとはっきりと伝わってくる。
最初に、ルイ・アームストロングとアート・ガーファンクルたちの歌を聴いてみよう。
What a Wonderful Worldは、1967年に作られた曲で、1960年代後半のアメリカ社会の混乱を背景にしている。
ずっと続く人種差別、ケネディー大統領の暗殺、ベトナム戦争、そして1968年になると黒人公民権運動の指導者キング牧師が暗殺される。
そうした分断と混乱の時代、wonderful worldを夢見ることで争う心を静めるようにという願いを込めて、歌詞と曲が作られた。
混乱の時代を象徴するのは、ルイ・アームストロングがWhat a Wonderful Worldの録音を望んだにもかかわらず、ABCレコードの社長の好みに合わず、許可が下りなかったということ。
そのために録音は社長にバレないようにこっそりと行われ、リリースまでこぎつけた。しかし、社長は宣伝を拒否し、最初に発表された時、この曲はまったくヒットしなかった。
What a wonderful Worldが人々の心を捕らえたのは、1987年に上映された映画 Good Morning, Vietnamの中で、アメリカから兵士が送られ、ベトナムの普通の人々が抑圧され、平和に見える農村を軍が爆撃する場面のバックに、この曲が流れた時だった。

ケイティ・メルアとエヴァ・キャシディが歌うWhat a wonderful worldは、サッチモとはずいぶん雰囲気が違う。しかし、wonderful worldを願う祈りの気持ちは同じように感じられる。
(What a ) Wonderful worldは、最初、1960年にサム・クックがリリースした曲。
この歌のテーマは、｢知識や教育が感情を支配することはできないが、愛が世界を素晴らしい場所にすることができる｣というもの。

« wonderful world this would be »の wouldは条件法であり、決して実現しているわけではなく、willのように未来にそうなるだろうと楽観しているわけでもないことがわかる。だからこそ、それでもwonderful worldになって欲しいという願いが強く感じられる。

実は、作詩・作曲にかかわったルー・アドラーは、そのテーマをそれほど真面目に考えていなかったという。
確かに、勉強なんか本当はどうでもいいけれど、でも君に愛してもらえるなら、A-studentになるように頑張るという歌詞は、いかにも若者の言いそうなことかもしれない。
しかし、歌手のサム・クックは、黒人の権利を主張する公民権運動にも積極的な関わりを持ち、1964年には、人種平等社会が訪れることへの期待を込めたメッセージソング A Change Is Gonna Comeを発表したりしている。
そうした意識を持ったクックがWonderful worldを取り上げたとすると、差別と偏見に満ちた世界を乗り越えた世界への願いをこの歌に籠めたということも十分に考えられる。
そうした曲を、1977年に、アート・ガーファンクル、ポール・サイモン、ジェームス・テイラーという、世界的に活躍する白人の歌手たちが歌ったのは、とても興味深い。
戦争の世紀と呼ばれる２０世紀と比較して、２１世紀が少しでもよい方向に向かっているのだろうか？
そんな疑問を抱きながら、少しでも多くの人がWhat a wonderful worldに耳を傾ければと、思ったりもする。
