｢サマータイム｣は、ジョージュ・ガーシュインの１９３５年のオペラ｢ポギーとベス｣の冒頭で歌われる曲。生まれたばかりの赤ん坊にクララが歌いかけるブルース調の子守歌。
１９２０年代のアメリカの黒人たちの悲惨な生活を背景に、子どもの成長を祈る歌詞が綴られている。
１９３６年、ビリー・ホリデーによって歌われ、ジャズの曲として人気を博した。

ノラ・ジョーンズは、シタール奏者ラヴィ・シャンカルの娘。
ラヴィ・シャンカールは、世界中にインドの文化を伝えた人物。ジャズ・マンの中では、ジョン・コルトレーンが１９６１年から手紙のやり取りを始め、その教えを受け、１９６５年には実際に面会もしている。
そのコルトレーンが１９６１年に録音した｢サマータイム｣。
フリージャズへの入り口に立っていて、メロディーはほとんど聞こえない。好き嫌いは分かれるだろうけれど、テナー・サックスのコルトレーンを中心に、演奏家たちのエネルギーはすごい。
コルトレーンを聞いた後だと、ニューオリンズ・ジャズを代表するシドニー・ベシェ（クラリネット）の演奏が、ブルースの味を活かしながら、実にのんびりしているように感じる。
ビーバップを先導したアルト奏者のチャーリー・パーカーだけれど、これから聞くのはストリングスをバックに、メロディーを活かした演奏。
スタン・ゲッツが１９５５年に録音した演奏は、アメリカ西海岸のジャズの代表。メロディーを崩しながら、調和はとれ、洗練された印象。
テナーサックスの巨匠コールマン・ホーキンズとロニー・ロリンズが揃っての演奏は１９６３年のもの。二人には珍しく、少しフリージャズっぽい。
こうして時代を追って聞いてくると、ニューオリンズから始まったジャズの歴史を、耳から知ることになる。
あとは、聞く人の感性に合うかどうか。
アート・ペッパー（アルト・サックス）の｢サマータイム｣は、実に抒情的。
こんな繊細な感性を持つジャズマンが、内的な苦しみから逃れるため麻薬に溺れていくのが、分からないでもない気がする。
ルイ･アームストロングのトランペットで始まる、ルイとエラ・フィッツジェラルドの競演は、しっとりとたバラードだが、根は明るい。
苦しい生活の中で、最後は子どもに明るい未来が来るようにと祈る、そんな感じがよく出ている。
最後は、この曲が人気を獲得するきっかけとなった、ビリー・ホリデー。｢サマータイム｣のジャズにおける古典的演奏。
