「ミス・オーティス・リグレッツ」が作曲された１９３４年、今よりももっとずっと黒人に対する差別が激しく、リンチが平然と行われていた時代。ジャズはそうした中で生まれてきた。

穏やかで美しい曲想とは反対に、歌詞はリンチをテーマにしている。
ミス・オーティスは、自分を捨てた恋人をピストルで撃ち殺し、警察に連行される。その後、群衆に牢獄から引っ張り出され、柳の木に吊るされてしまう。

この歌詞では、あえて、白人と黒人、社会的な上下を入れ替えられている。
上級階級の白人女性ミス・オーチスが、リンチにかけられ、木に吊される。
人種差別の問題に捻りをを入れ、美しいバラードになっているために、より心に深く響く。

カーメン・マクレーのThe Great American Music Hallにおける１９７７年ライブ録音は、歌声に説得力があり、ディジー・ガレスピーのトランペットも素晴らしい。

女優のマレーネ・ディートリヒがドイツ語で歌うヴァージョンも、youtubeにアップされている。
